Can one really trust astrology? Is it worth the while to read the weekly or daily horoscopes and even adjust one’s plans according to the advice of those who seem to better understand the obscure messages written in the stars? Or would we do better to dismiss astrological forecasts as rubbish or idle talk, or worse, a clever contrivance of some manipulative rascals looking to make money? What’s been keeping astrology alive through hundreds of years? Is it human naivety, our gullibility, our readiness to embrace any plausible explanation in our struggle to understand the life’s ups and downs and the twists of fate? Or is there really something behind it?

It has been known that the moon affects the way we act and feel, and that we supposedly respond differently to full and new moon…They say that the stars can affect us just as well.

I have long been curious to know if that’s true. And so it was that as I was reading through a list of recommended occupations for different signs of the zodiac it struck me that there is a very simple way to test the merits of astrological hypothesis and to determine if it really provides valuable guidance or if it’s an ingenious hundreds of years old bluff.

The idea is very simple. If astrology is to be believed then different zodiacs have the natural ability to excel in different professions. That would seem to mean a predilection for and excellence in certain academic subjects. Therefore if we question a representative number of people on their high school and college grades, and then sort their results by zodiac and by subject we will get an instant picture of how the zodiac works in practice.

According to the probability theory, if you keep rolling the die long enough, the outcomes should be equally distributed, i.e. the die will land on each of its sides with equal frequency. If however the die tends to favor a certain side, we are dealing with a loaded die.

And so if we compare the academic achievements of the different signs of the zodiac, and discover that, let’s say the Gemini, who are supposed to be good at learning foreign languages, generally score higher in foreign language than any other zodiac, we will have to conclude that astrology does represent certain unmanifest laws. If not, if the arithmetic mean of grades in a given subject is the same for different zodiacs, that would mean that the astrological hypothesis does not stand the test of reality.

Obviously, for the result to be objective we would need to compare the grades of a large enough number of people representing different signs of the zodiac.

That’s where the Internet comes in.

I’ve created a simple database and set up this page inviting everyone to take part in the research. It will only take you a couple of minutes. All you need to do is choose your date of birth and your grades in different subjects. Because this project is conceived as an international endeavor, there will be some discrepancies between the systems of education.

Some of the listed subjects may have had a different name where you went to school or been absent from the curriculum altogether, and the very grades are different in different countries. Therefore if you never studied a subject pick "No such subject".

The grades are as follows:

  • Excellent

  • Good

  • Satisfactory

  • Unsatisfactory

And lastly, once you’ve filled in your information, you can instantly view the result and leave a comment.

Choose your date of birth.

The year of birth is required for the 12 year cycle (year of the rooster, year of the dog, etc.) All information is completely anonymous.

Month

Year

Now pick the grades you had in the listed subjects in school and/or college. Since this information will be completed by people from different countries representing different systems of education, if you never studied any particular subject just pick “No such subject”. If, on the other hand, you had several subjects qualifying for an entry, or if you studied a certain subject both in school and college, pick the average grade.
